Lick 9

Lick 9 also adds guts and a boost to the IV (GD7) chord while featuring the cool King-ism of the “piggyback” bend, whereby he gradually goes up from a half step to a whole step. Always know that, when played over the IV chord, the D3rd of the I chord functions as the “leading tone” to confirm the tonality. The bend to the 9th (AD), however, creates scintillating tension that anticipates the next measure of the I (DD7) chord. Observe the F at fret 13 as a passing tone between E and GD, producing a smooth, chromatic passage.
